Why do intelligent people smoke?

Since I was a kid, I’ve had an extreme dislike of smoking and I tend to judge people who smoke as being stupid, rebellious, and uneducated. After all, smoking is harmful to yourself and those around you. And the act itself seems quite pointless- it’s not like you gain anything from it. It doesn’t satisfy your hunger, thirst, or sexual desire. It does not end in a proud achievement like finishing a book, a movie, or a video game. And it does not even seem exciting enough as bungee jumping or going on a roller-coaster.

Today, I found out that someone educated whom I look up to smokes. I knew by the obvious cloud of smokey smell which surrounded them every time they walked in. This confounded me- wait, you’re intelligent. Shouldn’t you know better? So, I googled this question, and this was the essay I found. Although written quite a while ago, it’s mainly about human nature and thus still applies to us today. It’s a really interesting read!

And followers, is there anything you want to add to this debate? Do you smoke? Why? Why not? What do you think of the act of smoking and of people who are smokers? Is it a smart-kid thing to do?
